Coral Gardens is located in the North Sound of Grand Cayman, not far from the world-

famous Stingray City Sandbar.

Unlike a beach snorkeling location, Coral Gardens is reached by boat. The reef sits within the protected waters of the North Sound, making it a natural snorkeling stop when exploring this part of Grand Cayman.

Its location also means Coral Gardens can easily be combined with other North Sound attractions, particularly Stingray City.

Instead of spending your entire trip at one location, you can experience the stingrays on the sandbar and then head to Coral Gardens for a completely different underwater experience.

What Is Coral Gardens?

The name describes the site pretty well.

Rather than one continuous reef wall, Coral Gardens consists of coral formations spread across a large shallow area. This gives snorkelers plenty of space to explore without everyone having to follow exactly the same route.

The water around much of the site is approximately 7 feet deep, although depths naturally vary depending on exactly where the boat anchors and the conditions on the day.

One of our favorite little features of Coral Gardens is the heart-shaped rock and coral formations that can be found around the site.

Is Coral Gardens Good for Beginner Snorkelers?

Yes. Coral Gardens can be an excellent snorkeling location for beginners and families.

One of the biggest advantages is the relatively shallow water.

At around 7 feet in many areas, you don't have the feeling of looking down into extremely deep water that can sometimes make first-time snorkelers uncomfortable.

The large snorkeling area also means there is usually plenty of room to find your own space.

For beginners, one of the most important things is simply becoming comfortable breathing through a snorkel.

There's no need to rush.

Get comfortable, float on the surface and let the equipment do the work.

Is Coral Gardens Good for Kids?

Combining the two gives you a much better look at what the North Sound has to offer.

What Should You Bring to Coral Gardens?

You don't need much for a snorkeling trip, but there are a few things worth bringing.

A swimsuit, towel and reef-friendly sun protection are a good start. A rash guard or lightweight sun shirt is also useful because Cayman sunshine can be strong, particularly when you're spending time on the water.

And, of course, you'll need a mask, snorkel and fins.

The most important piece of snorkeling equipment is actually the mask.

A properly fitting mask makes an enormous difference. If water is constantly leaking into your mask, you're going to spend more time adjusting equipment than looking at the reef.

TIP:................ Most charter companies will provide snorkel equipment for free as part of the price.

I would also make it a point if you have children to bring swim googles instead of a mask, the experience will be better for first timers.
