If you're planning a trip to Grand Cayman, chances are you've already heard about Stingray City. It's one of the Cayman Islands' most famous attractions and gives visitors the opportunity to get into the beautiful waters of the North Sound and experience wild Southern Stingrays up close.
But where exactly is Stingray City? How do you get there? What should you wear? Are the stingrays dangerous? And how much does it cost?
Here are the answers to some of the most common questions visitors ask about Stingray City Grand Cayman.
What is Stingray City?
Stingray City is a unique wildlife experience located in the North Sound of Grand Cayman, where visitors can enter the water and interact with wild Southern Stingrays in their natural environment.
There are actually two different locations commonly associated with Stingray City.
Stingray City Sandbar is the famous shallow-water location most visitors experience. Depending on the tide, the water is shallow enough for guests to stand while stingrays swim around them.
The original Stingray City is a deeper location closer to the barrier reef and has traditionally been more popular with scuba divers.
The story of Stingray City goes back decades. Fishermen returning to the North Sound would clean their catch in the calm waters and throw scraps overboard. Stingrays began gathering for the easy meal and gradually became accustomed to boats and people.
Over the years, this developed into the incredible wildlife experience we know today.
Where Can You Find Stingray City, Cayman?
Stingray City is located in the North Sound of Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, inside the protection of the island's barrier reef.
It is completely offshore, meaning you cannot drive or walk to Stingray City. You need a boat to reach it.
For visitors staying around Rum Point, Cayman Kai, North Side and East End, Kaibo Marina provides a particularly convenient departure point for reaching Stingray City.
Where Can I Find Stingray City on a Map?
On a map of Grand Cayman, look inside the North Sound, toward the barrier reef.
Stingray City Sandbar sits several miles offshore and is surrounded by the beautiful shallow waters for which the North Sound is famous.
If you're using Google Maps or another mapping service, searching for “Stingray City Sandbar, Grand Cayman” will show you its location in relation to the rest of the island.
And remember — seeing it on the map doesn't mean you can drive there! Stingray City can only be reached by boat. On our North Sound map below, Stingray City Sandbar is marked as location #4.
How Do You Get to Stingray City?
The only way to get to Stingray City is by boat.
There are boat tours and private charters departing from different parts of Grand Cayman, so the best departure point will often depend on where you're staying.
Visitors staying around Seven Mile Beach and George Town commonly depart from the western side of the island.
If you're staying around Rum Point, Cayman Kai, North Side or East End, you can depart from Kaibo Marina and travel directly across the North Sound.
Silverthatch Watersports operates from Kaibo Marina, making it especially convenient for visitors staying on the eastern and northern sides of Grand Cayman.
How Far is Stingray City From Kaibo Marina?
Stingray City Sandbar is roughly in the centre of the North Sound,depending on what side you are traveling from, I would say around 15–20 minutes at a cruising speed, depending on the boat and conditions on the North Sound. But if you leave from Kaibo less then 5 Minutes at full speed.
This makes Kaibo one of the most convenient departure points for guests staying around Rum Point, Cayman Kai and North Side.
And the boat ride is part of the experience. Heading across the North Sound gives you a chance to enjoy the scenery before arriving at the Sandbar.
Can You Go to Stingray City by Yourself?
Technically, yes — if you have access to a suitable boat and know how to safely navigate the North Sound.
However, Stingray City is offshore and surrounded by shallow water, reefs and channels, so visitors unfamiliar with the area are usually much better off travelling with an experienced local captain.
Stingray City is also a designated Wildlife Interaction Zone, with rules governing how visitors interact with the stingrays.
Going with an experienced local operator means you don't have to worry about navigating the North Sound or finding the correct location, and your crew can show you how to interact with the stingrays safely and responsibly.
Are the Stingrays at Stingray City Dangerous?
Generally, no. Southern Stingrays are not aggressive animals, and the stingrays at Stingray City have been interacting with visitors for generations.
However, they are still wild animals and should always be treated with respect.
Stingrays have a defensive barb on their tail, but this is primarily used for protection rather than attacking people.
When you're in the water, remain calm, don't chase or grab the stingrays and let them approach you.
You'll also hear your crew talk about the “Stingray Shuffle.”
Instead of lifting your feet and taking large steps across the Sandbar, gently slide your feet along the sandy bottom. This helps reduce the chance of accidentally stepping on a stingray resting in the sand.
Listen to your captain and crew, follow the Wildlife Interaction Zone rules and give the animals the respect they deserve.
For most visitors, any nervousness disappears pretty quickly once they're in the water and see how gracefully the stingrays move around them.
What Should You Wear to Stingray City?
Keep it simple — you're going to get wet!
A swimsuit or swim shorts is really all you need. A lightweight rash guard or sun shirt is also a great choice, particularly for additional protection from the Cayman sun.
A hat and sunglasses are useful during the boat ride, and don't forget sunscreen. Where possible, choose a reef-friendly sunscreen and apply it before heading out.
You generally don't need water shoes at Stingray City Sandbar. The bottom is soft sand, and being barefoot makes it easier to use the Stingray Shuffle.
It's also a good idea to bring:
A towel
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Hat
Dry clothes
Waterproof camera or GoPro
Most importantly, bring your swimwear because you're definitely going to want to get in!
How Much Does it Cost to Visit Stingray City?
There isn't a traditional admission ticket or entrance gate at Stingray City. What you pay for is the boat trip or private charter that takes you there.
Prices vary considerably depending on whether you choose a shared tour or private charter, how long you're on the water, the type of boat, the number of people in your group and which additional stops are included.
When comparing Stingray City tours, don't look at price alone.
Consider how much time you'll actually spend on the water, how many guests will be on the boat and what other locations you'll get to experience.
Many Stingray City trips can also be combined with snorkeling, Starfish Point and other beautiful locations around the North Sound.
Is Stingray City Worth Visiting?
For us, the answer is an easy yes.
There's something very different about seeing a Southern Stingray swimming in an aquarium and standing in the warm, clear Caribbean Sea while a wild stingray glides right past you.
Every trip is slightly different because these are wild animals. Some days you'll have stingrays surrounding you; other days you might spend time watching just a few individuals cruising across the Sandbar.
That's part of what makes the experience special.
Stingray City isn't simply another attraction — it's a part of Grand Cayman's watersports history and culture and has become one of the experiences most closely associated with our island.
